Bedtime Stories For Children | A Journey to Nowhere

Bedtime Stories for Children | A Journey to Nowhere is the story of two adventurous friends trying to make their way to New Jersey.

Two best friends, a turtle named Turty and a snail called Hail were enjoying a nice, quiet afternoon in the backyard of the house where Turty lived along with two other pets: a cat and a dog. Turty is usually let loose for about 20 minutes in the yard during the afternoons, where one day, he met his friend Hail. The two spent most afternoons together, talking about different things, from what foods they liked to eat to the things they enjoyed doing the most. But that specific afternoon, Hail was feeling especially adventurous. He wanted to do something different for a change.

"Turty, have you ever been to any other places besides this backyard?" Hail asked.

"Oh yes! I was at the pet shop were I was purchased by the humans, " Turty answered.

"No, no. I meant somewhere different. For instance, have you ever wondered where the birds fly? And all of the different places they see?" Hail asked again.

"Wow, so you want to fly now?" Turty said.

"No, I know that I can't fly. I just want to experience being in different places. I mean, I was born in this yard and have lived here ever since. I've never been anywhere else. I just feel like exploring some other place, that's all." Hail replied.

"But where would you like to go?" Turty asked.

"New York, " Hail answered quickly.

"New York? That's a dangerous place for a snail to go!" Turty exclaimed.

"What makes you say so? And how do you know, since you've never been there before?" Hail questioned.

"I know, and I have been there before. That pet shop I told you about was in New York. THe people are always in a rush there. I've seen children break the glass enclosures where they keep some of the pets while playing rough in the store. Snails are accustomed to a slow lifestyle. Trust me buddy, you don't want to go there. You won't enjoy it."

"Well, how about going to New Jersey then?"

"I haven't been to Jersey yet, so I'm not sure. But I think it's better than New York."

"Okay, so what do you say we head there instead? You and I. We'll have ourselves a little adventure."

"Are you crazy? How the heck will we ever make it there? We have no clue where it is, how to get there, which direction to take, how long it would take us to get there. or where would we find food and drink during our trip?"

"Well, I guess that's why they call it an adventure. Plus, if we wound up in a different place, so be it! It doesn't have to be Jersey. And, from now on, only eat half of your food rations. If we do so for one whole week, we should have enough food to last us a few days."

"You're not serious right now, are you?"

"Of course I am! You're my bestest buddy in the whole wide world! I've known you for a long time."

"Well, I guess your right that we've known each other for a long time, it's been over two weeks now. Man, I don't know how time flies so quickly!"

"So what do you say buddy, are you up for an adventure?"

"But what if we get lost, and we can't find our way back home? How will we survive? I'm a house pet! I'm not used to finding my own food! My owners have always brought food for me themselves!"

"Don't worry, I've thought that out as well. We will drop little pebbles along our trail to retrace our track when it's time to return."

"Uh, I'm still not too sure about it. It still seems too risky, " Turty groaned.

"C'mon, Turty! We would have the time of our lives!"

"Okay, fine. I guess I'll join you, just because I love you so much and I don't want you going by yourself. I can see it in your eyes and I can tell that you really want to do this."

So the two friends started saving their food for one whole week, planning their trip details every afternoon that they met. When the day finally came for their adventure to begin, they met in the backyard where the humans normally kept Turty during his play time. "Are you ready buddy? Hop on my back and let's get out of here, "Turty said.

The snail hopped on his friend's back with a big smile on his face like a little child in a candy store.

"Let's go that way, " Hail said with a gesture toward the neighbor's fence.

"Slow down there buddy. We can't do that! Have you forgotten about the neighbors' rottweiler? He'll tear us to shreds! We must go in the opposite direction, " replied Turty.

"Oh yeah, I forgot about that crazy dog. Alright pal, head the opposite way then."

As soon as the turtle made his first move, the snail yelled out loud jokingly, "Slow down you maniac, you're gonna get us killed!"

"Hahaha, very funny, " replied the Turtle.

Because the backyard was so spacious, the turtle's speed was no match for the lengthly trip out of the yard. So, while the two adventure seekers were still a few yards away from exiting the yard, Turty's 20 minute break was over. The humans came out of their home, seeking him, and when they found him, they carried him back inside, leaving Hail alone.

"Have no worry! We'll try this again tomorrow!" Turty called out to his friend as he disappeared from view.

"You bet we will!" Hail answered.

So, the friends tried again the next day just to finish the same way they ended the previous day. They continuously tried again and again, failing miserably each time. So, the journey to nowhere continued every afternoon for weeks and weeks. Until one day Turty said, "Enough is enough my friend, I give up, we will not make it out of this yard, so starting today we will have to give up the idea of going to New Jersey, " not knowing that they were in New Jersey all along.
