Why Can't We Be Friends?

John Stewart was a very smart kid who was very shy. He performed very well at school and got top grades. He always did his homework and handed it in on time. No assignment was too hard for him. However, John didn’t have a single friend in his whole class. Most kids made fun of his hand-me-down clothes that his mom bought him from the thrift shop. John's father passed away when he was 7 years old. His mother worked 2 jobs to take care of him and his little sister. Both jobs paid her very little, so she couldn't buy her kids new clothes like the rest of their classmates.

Kevin Black was John's classmate who did okay at school and got average grades on all topics except mathematics. He was tall, big and strong, and bullied every one in class including John. None of the kids dared to make fun of him for anything. He was a mean kid that other kids were scared of. He was very outspoken, and the teachers always asked him to keep quiet and do his work.

Two kids who couldn’t be more different, but an act of kindness will make them connected.

After mid-term exams, John got an A+ on all topics including math, while Kevin did well on most topics, but failed math miserably. The teacher told him to get his act together and start doing better. He realized that if he does not pass math, he will have to go to Summer school instead of spending Summer in Florida with his grandparents. He knew he had to find someone that could help him very soon.

One day while John was on his way to school, he saw an older lady drop what looked like a little purse out of her hand bag without noticing it while walking on the other side of the street.

John yelled, "Ma'am, you dropped something."

The lady didn't hear him because of the traffic noise. John crossed the street after making sure there were no cars coming, picked up the purse, and started running after the lady. He caught up with her around the corner.

"Ma'am, you dropped this, " John said softly while handing the purse to the lady.

"Oh my God, thank you very much son."

"You are very welcome, " John said, as he started to head back the other way towards his school.

"Wait a minute son, let me give you something, " the lady said while getting some cash out of her purse.

"I don't want to be late for school, and there is no need for that ma'am, thank you anyways."

"At least tell me your name and what school you go to."

"My name is John Stewart and I go to Kalvin Deagan School on Varick Street, " John said, while vanishing around the corner.

That lady happened to be Kevin Black's mother. Later that evening, Kevin's mother told her husband about the kind little boy that returned her purse. She told him how she dropped the purse with a whole lot of money in it, including rent money and many other valuables like her credit cards. She also told him how the kid didn't even take her reward, even though she thought he was poor because of his worn out shoes and clothes.

"I think he said he goes to your school Kevin, do you know anyone named John Stewart?" she said addressing her son Kevin.

"What? Did you say John Stewart? Little John?"

"Yes, he was kind of little, do you know him?"

"Of course I do, he is my classmate. He is really poor but it seems that he is honest."

"Can you do me a favor Kevin? Invite him over for some snacks or something, I want to thank him properly."

"Sure thing mom, I'll ask him first thing tomorrow morning."

The next day John got really scared when he saw big Kevin charging his way. He thought that he was going to get a beating. But to his surprise, Kevin gave him a big hug instead.

"Why are you hugging me, what did I do?" John asked.

"You returned my mom's purse yesterday, that's what you did! Thank you, thank you very much, " Kevin answered.

"You mean that nice lady is your mother?"

"Yes she is, and she wants you to stop by after school for some cookies that she will bake herself."

"I don't know about that, you know we get a lot of homework, I need to go home and do it."

"Well, how about doing our homework together at my place?"

"I don't know."

"Come on John, it'll be fun."

"Okay Kevin, I will do it, but I have to get my mother's permission first."

After school, John and Kevin walked together to John's home to get his mom's permission. John's mom was more than happy to see him with a friend for a change. She agreed right away after asking Kevin if his parents were okay with that. Kevin confirmed that they were and gave her his address and phone number in case she needed to get in touch with John.

The two kids enjoyed the freshly baked cookies and the refreshments Kevin's mom served. They did the homework together. Kevin was amazed how John explained the usually very difficult math homework and made it look so easy.

From that day on, the two became best friends. No one dared to bully John any more after knowing that he is Kevin's best friend. With John's help, Kevin passed math with flying colors and he got to spend his Summer break with his grandparents in Florida. He kept in touch with John every day.
