Kids Short Stories | How the Moon Split

John was reading Kids Short Stories online when he decided he had enough and went to the window to watch the heavy rain fall down from the cloudy skies, when all of a sudden, it stopped raining and whatever little clouds that were left over form the storm raced away. A couple of minutes later, John was able to see the crescent-shaped moon. It was glowing so brightly, it lit up all the wet buildings, along with the streets.

The wind was picking up speed as time went by. John was amazed how the wind was shaking up the huge tree across the street from his house. Suddenly, out of nowhere, John could see a huge blast of light out of the corner of his eye, followed by an extremely loud explosion. He looked up and saw a huge cloud of dust surrounding the moon. When the dust settled, John saw the strangest thing ever. The moon was now 2 moons almost, as the crescent-shaped moon almost split in half, with the lower half dangling and barely attached to the upper half.

John's mom ran to the living room when she heard the explosion. She was shocked to see what had happened. Almost everyone, as far as John's blue eyes could see,  was looking up, wondering what had happened to the moon. Images of the split moon were all over the news, on every TV channel, but no one was able to give an answer as to what exactly had happened. John and his mom were able to hear a couple of men speaking out loud through the open window.

"I told you there were aliens out there!" one man exclaimed loudly.

"You have to be out of your mind! Our astronauts would have found that out, if that was true, " the other man replied.

"But what else could it be? It has to be an alien invasion. Maybe the Martians decided to invade the moon!" the first one exclaimed.

"I told you, you're crazy. Why would the Martians, if they even exist, invade the moon? And why would they bomb it so hard, if there is no one fighting them back? There's got to be a more logical explanation than that. Let's go inside and watch the news. Maybe they have a better explanation of what has happened."

"Wow, an alien invasion!" John cried excitedly.

"Calm down now John, I happen to agree with the other fellow. There has to be a more believeable story than the alien nonsense, " his mom said.

John and his mom moved away from the window to watch the news like everyone else, hoping that someone somewhere would say something more realistic than the alien story. On the news, many important people were interviewed; some were scientists, who agreed that the split of the moon, was a result of a major moon-quake, powerful enough to cause the split, just like the ones that hit our planet in the ancient times. On the other hand,  the religious people all agreed the moon split was a sign from God that the end of times was near, and it was time for everyone to repent and start praying.

Time passed by, and there was no definite answer as to what exactly had happened to the moon. As each group of people interviewed made up stories of their own and swore that it was the truth, they left the average person confused as to what to believe. So, the mystery continued while the moon, or the new moon, appeared to be shining brighter than ever.

"How do you like my mystery story, Dad? It was a weekend homework assigned by my English teacher. And how do you like the picture? I drew it myself!" Adam asked his father as soon as his dad finished reading the story.

"Great! Just beautiful, Adam, and I love the drawing as well! But I have one question. Don't you think that your ending leaves the readers hanging?" his father asked.

"True, very true. But that's the beauty of it. Mystery stories are even more exciting when the ending stays a mystery, leaving it to the readers' imaginations to pick the ending they like, " Adam replied.

"I've never thought of it that way son, but I guess that makes a lot of sense. Great work! I think you'll get an A and I also think you should add it to your collection of Kids Short Stories you've been writing, " his father responded.
